Synonym(s):

What is Breast Imaging?

Breast Imaging collectively refers to imaging studies that diagnose breast diseases. This includes the use of X-rays (i.e. mammography), ultrasound scans, and MRI scans to screen or evaluate breast abnormalities. Following the imaging, breast biopsies may then be performed in our mammography suite to confirm whether a breast abnormality is cancerous.

The management of breast diseases involves a multi-disciplinary care team to provide comprehensive care for our patients.

Is Breast Imaging Safe?

During a mammography, a low dose of radiation used. Nevertheless, patients who are pregnant are required to inform the radiographer before the mammogram. It is safe for breastfeeding patients to go for a mammogram.

Examples of Breast Imaging:

  • Mammography for screening or diagnosis of breast cancer
  • Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) is used to complement mammographic findings.
  • Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM) involves the use of a contrast agent (dye) to detect and characterise breast findings. It can be used to evaluate indeterminate mammographic findings and to determine the extent of the disease
  • Breast biopsies are used to diagnose and characterise indeterminate findings
