What is Breast Imaging?

Breast Imaging collectively refers to imaging studies that diagnose breast diseases. This includes the use of X-rays (i.e. mammography), ultrasound scans, and MRI scans to screen or evaluate breast abnormalities. Following the imaging, breast biopsies may then be performed in our mammography suite to confirm whether a breast abnormality is cancerous.

The management of breast diseases involves a multi-disciplinary care team to provide comprehensive care for our patients.

Is Breast Imaging Safe?

During a mammography, a low dose of radiation used. Nevertheless, patients who are pregnant are required to inform the radiographer before the mammogram. It is safe for breastfeeding patients to go for a mammogram.

Examples of Breast Imaging:

Mammography for screening or diagnosis of breast cancer
Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) is used to complement mammographic findings.
Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM) involves the use of a contrast agent (dye) to detect and characterise breast findings. It can be used to evaluate indeterminate mammographic findings and to determine the extent of the disease
Breast biopsies are used to diagnose and characterise indeterminate findings
