Exercise is considered an important adjunct to the prescription of drugs for certain medical conditions.
Research has proven that exercise, at the correct intensity and duration, not only improves the quality of life – it also decreases the incidence of disease, chronic health conditions and obesity.
Exercise Is Medicine Singapore (EIMS) is a programme spearheaded by Singapore Sport and Exercise Medicine Centre @ CGH (SSMC@CGH) to make physical activity and exercise a standard part of preventing and treating diseases.
It aims to train and equip healthcare and fitness professionals with the necessary skills, tools and resources to prescribe exercise in the right dose to prevent and treat over 40 common chronic health conditions for patients and the public.
EIMS draws principles from the Exercise is Medicine™ global initiative by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

EIMS Pre-Participation Screening FAQ

1. Who is this screening for?

This screening is for anyone who is interested in starting an exercise routine, and wishes to rule out major underlying health risks before doing so. The screening will provide an indication of the individual’s level of health risk, and the subsequent exercise prescription will provide the recommended physical activity regimen to manage the risks.

2. Why is this screening helpful?

The screening helps to identify underlying chronic health conditions and their risk factors, so that appropriate action can be taken in a timely manner. With the risk stratification, an appropriate exercise prescription can then be instituted safety.

3. How to do it?

Start by making an appointment with SSMC@CGH clinic via the CGH Appt Centre at 6850 3333. State that the appointment is for EIM Pre-participation Screening. You will go through a consultation with the doctor to review and determine your health status and exercise levels. Please bring along your identity card on your appointment date.
 

EIMS vs Athlete Pre-Participation Screening Package Components    

The EIMS Screening Package is for anyone who is interested in starting an exercise routine but is unsure of their health status. The screening will provide an indication of the individual’s level of health risk, and the subsequent exercise prescription will provide the recommended physical activity regimen to manage the risks. The screening protocol is based on recommendations by the American Council of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and Exercise is Medicine (EIM) global.

The Athlete Screening Packages are for anyone who participates or intends to participate in competitive/recreational sports and would like a more thorough battery of tests to identify potential exercise risks, so that appropriate measures can be promptly taken. Although relatively thorough, the screening packages will not be able to rule out absolutely all underlying risks.
