Local Study: Oral Supplemnets can Help Seniors Reduce the Risk of Malnutrition

16 January 2021 - Researchers from CGH, SingHealth Polyclinics and Abbott found that dietary consultation and oral nutritional supplements can improve muscle mass of elderly Singaporeans at risk of malnutrition, and lead to at least 5% weight gain, three times lower risk of malnutrition, improved vitamin D status and enhanced physical function, specifically increased leg strength and handgrip. The study was published in Clinical Nutrition.

Adj Assoc Prof Samuel Chew, the principal investigator of the study and Senior Consultant, Geriatric Medicine, said that given Singapore’s ageing population and the results from this SHIELD study, CGH will work to reverse the effects of malnutrition by developing interventions in collaboration with our partners, so our older Singaporeans can continue to live healthy and active lives at home and in the community.
