At Changi General Hospital (CGH), care flourishes in the hands of our dedicated care team – professionals whose clinical expertise is complemented with compassion and a commitment to nurturing others. Dr Li Fuyin, Senior Nurse Clinician and Advanced Practice Nurse, exemplifies this – advancing geriatric care while guiding and encouraging younger nurses.
Inspired by her grandfather’s words that “supporting others in times of need is life’s greatest gift”, Fuyin has spent over two decades nursing patients to better health at the Caring General Hospital. In this time, she has seen the hospital transform – embracing innovation, expanding services and enhancing patient care – while staying rooted in its enduring values of compassion, teamwork and integrity.
Fuyin describes her work at the Caring General Hospital
An Advanced Practice Nurse specialising in geriatric care, Fuyin is focused on providing comprehensive, patient-centred care to older adults who may have complex needs. She develops personalised care plans that addresses the medical, social and emotional aspects of ageing, working closely with other CGH colleagues – from specialists and fellow nurses to social workers, pharmacists, therapists and dietitians – to ensure patients receive holistic support.
Her work includes co-creating a hospital-wide model of care for patients with dementia and delirium, and adopting mobility protocols that help older patients maintain independence and prevent functional decline. Embracing innovation, she also leverages technology such as the use of social robots for patient engagement, and integration of virtual reality tools into dementia and delirium training for nurses.
“The integration of technology in patient care has been both challenging and exciting. While it takes time to adapt and adjust to newer innovations, I believe this is essential to enhance patient outcomes and keeping healthcare future-ready. My team and I introduced our social robot, Pepper, during the pandemic to facilitate patient engagement, and we have seen how it complements nursing care, particularly in engaging older patients in physical activities and cognitive exercises.”
“At the same time, it is essential that we do not lose sight of the human aspect of care. By leveraging innovations and care models that support older adults in living healthy, independent lives, we can build a future of healthcare that is seamless, accessible and always rooted in empathy and compassion.”
Beyond the bedside, Fuyin and the CGH geriatric nursing team also play a pivotal role in professional and community outreach. They regularly organise geriatric nursing conferences and awareness roadshows on Alzheimer’s, raising awareness of healthy ageing and advancing geriatric nursing practice. Most recently, Fuyin represented CGH at the 5th Thailand Elderly Health Service Forum 2025, sharing insights on geriatric care and contributing to the exchange of knowledge and best practices with international peers.
Fuyin shares on mentoring younger nurses at CGH
Alongside clinical and outreach work, Fuyin is deeply committed to nurturing younger nurses. She sees mentoring as a way to give back to the profession, creating a safe and supportive environment where junior nurses feel encouraged to grow in confidence and ability. Through regular guidance and feedback, she helps her mentees develop critical thinking, resilience, and leadership skills – preparing them to take on expanded roles in patient care and healthcare innovation.
Her efforts have borne fruit. Several of her mentees have gone on to pursue Master’s and PhD studies, while others have taken on leadership responsibilities in their departments. Fuyin describes seeing their growth as one of the most rewarding aspects of her career.
“I believe that mentoring is essential for professional growth, and I’m passionate about helping nurses develop their skills, confidence and resilience. It is incredibly fulfilling to see them become compassionate, competent and innovative professionals who make meaningful contributions and positively shape the future of healthcare.”
