Exercise physiologists work in the area of injury prevention and sports performance enhancement through individualized exercise plans to help meet specific sport or physical fitness goals. This can improve an individual's physical capability in domains including:

  • strength, power, speed and agility
  • physical endurance and functional flexibility
  • confidence in sports participation

Outpatient Services

Strength and conditioning session

This service helps to minimise the harmful effects of a decrease in activity during injury recovery phase. This program also improves an individual’s physical capability in following domains including:

  • Improving physical endurance, strength and functional flexibility
  • Optimising of training plans with regards to physical training
  • Sports specific testing and training for confidence in sports participation

Sports massage

Sports massage is a soft tissue treatment that assists with many types of sports injuries. It allows for muscle relaxation and helps prevent muscle tightness A sports massage also enhances athletic performance and increases physical recovery rates during training and competitions.

Sports massage has specific benefits including:

  • Improving blood flow
  • Facilitating removal of lactic acid
  • Increasing joint range of motion and flexibility
  • Decreasing muscle tension
  • Reducing recovery time after training

Conditions that can benefits from sports massage include:

  • Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)
  • Tight muscle groups
  • Recovery from intense training

Isokinetic Testing

Isokinetic testing is an objective method which helps to set clear goals and accurate training designs during rehabilitation. It uses color graphics to compare the affected and non-affected sides and presented in simple terms for you, doctors and others involved.

Sub-Maximal Test

A sub-maximal test allows for an individual’s cardiorespiratory or aerobic fitness level to be estimated without fully exerting themselves. You may choose from either a cycling test or a treadmill test.

The tests we offer are as follows:

  1. YMCA submaximal cycling test
  2. YMCA step test
  3. 1.6 kilometres treadmill walk/jog test

Two-dimensional Video Gait Analysis for Running

An inefficient running gait wastes energy as the body may move more vertically or horizontally than it needs to and can be related to overuse injuries. With the assistance of video recording as well as image processing software, your running gait can be analysed and studied, and these inefficiencies can be corrected.

While there is no replacement for practice, a seasoned runner can still benefit from a detailed biomechanical evaluation to improve their training regimen.

V̇O2max Test (Maximal oxygen consumption)

V̇O2max refers to the maximal amount of oxygen consumed by our body during maximal exercise. It is also the measurement of one's present state of aerobic fitness.

This maximal test comprises treadmill running with increasing intensity, accompanied by a gas analysis conducted through an attached facemask. This test requires an 'all-out' effort on your part for accurate results.

Lactate Profiling

Lactate profiling is a test, which determines the lactate threshold of an individual during running. Blood lactate is a by-product of the body when it does not have sufficient oxygen for energy metabolism. This happens when a person is exercising at too high an intensity. As blood lactate increases in the body, a person will find it difficult to sustain the exercise intensity and would need to slow down or stop.

Lactate profiling helps establish training intensities, which can aid in the planning of a training program for an individual.
