Inpatient Programmes

Inpatient care is provided in the purpose-built rehabilitation wards at the Integrated Building. Patients can participate in comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation programmes, where the emphasis is on empowering independence in a safe environment.

Patients will be reviewed regularly by members of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team such as physiotherapists, occupation therapists, speech therapists, medical social workers and so on.

Appropriate patients will be identified to participate in additional programmes below depending on prevailing pandemic restrictions.

7-days-a-Week Model of Care for Stroke

It is well-established that therapy intensity is a critical factor to post-stroke recovery particularly in the acute and subacute periods. As conventional therapy (PT/OT/ST) can only be carried out up to 5.5 days a week. we have developed means to increase the therapy to 7-days-a-week (for suitable patients) by incorporating adjunct robotic therapy such as Andago and ArmeoSpring (which has been shown to improve mobility1), and empowering suitable patients to perform upper limb exercises on their own volition through our TRIO programme. Patients are encouraged to be involved and proactive throughout their recovery journey.

Transitional Living Unit (TLU)

The unit has been designed to simulate the living environment similar to a Housing Development Board (HDB) flat. There are two units available. Each unit includes a sleeping area, a kitchen, toilet and a laundry area. It provides a safe environment for selected patients to practice their functional skills in preparation for discharge. . The aim is to instill more confidence in their self-management upon discharge.

Self-Administration of Medication (SAM)

Patients are given the opportunity to manage and take their own medications in hospital as part of the rehabilitation process. . This programme provides a safe and structured environment for patients to be familiar with their own medications and start managing them prior to discharge, and is in line with the goal of enhancing independence and medication adherence.

Volunteer-led Therapeutic Play Therapy

Trained volunteers lead group or individual activities regularly using stimulating materials such as card/board games, Nintendo Wii and iPads to engage patients both physically and cognitively.

ENriched Rehabilitation Inpatient Challenge (ENRICH)

By creating an enriched environment within the rehabilitation ward, patients are challenged to do more beyond their formal therapy sessions. Activities such as mahjong, karaoke, newspapers and magazines are available at the communal area. Patients can also express themselves through art (art therapy), or work on individual activity kits to promote self-directed therapeutic activities. To encourage more social interaction, suitable patients are encouraged to dine in the communal dining area as well.
