The National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) is the national and regional specialist centre for conditions of the brain, spine, nerves and muscles. NNI offers treatment for over 20 subspecialties, including stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, brain tumours and brain injury.
NNI operates out of Changi General Hospital (CGH), two main campuses (Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Singapore General Hospital (SGH) as well as three other partner hospitals KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH), Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and Sengkang General Hospital (SKH).
At Changi General Hospital, NNI doctors from the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery provide general and emergency services for conditions like stroke and head injuries.
The Neurology team operates an Acute Stroke Unit (ASU) providing care to acute stroke patients. A multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses, therapists, dieticians and medical social workers aid stroke recovery by offering individualised treatment, rehabilitation and home care plans.
In addition, NNI@CGH sees patients with the following conditions:
The Neurosurgery team provides 24/7 coverage for neurosurgical emergencies such as head injuries, strokes, brain tumours, brain infections and hydrocephalus (i.e. a condition where cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain).
The Traumatic Brain Injury Programme provides care to patients who suffer from acute and severe head injuries due to accidents and falls including resuscitative care, surgical treatment and intensive care therapy. At the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), patients are closely managed by a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons and neurointensivists (i.e. an anaesthetist specialising in neurosurgical intensive care).
Neurovascular services are also provided to patients who suffer from haemorrhagic strokes, aneurysms (i.e. a ballooning spot filled with blood on the brain’s blood vessel) and arteriovenous malformations (i.e. abnormal ‘tangle’ of blood vessels).
Besides CGH, NNI operates out of two main campuses at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Singapore General Hospital (SGH), as well as at three other partner hospitals.
If necessary, patients may be transferred to NNI@SGH and NNI@TTSH for further treatment or for sub-acute conditions like brain tumours.
