Bisacodyl is used to treat constipation. It is available in both tablets and suppositories forms.
It may also be used to empty the colon before an X-ray examination of the abdomen (including stomach and intestines) or endoscopy (where a camera is used to examine the digestive tract) and before surgery.
Common side effects include cramps, nausea and vomiting.
For the suppository, it may cause some irritation to the anus.

Bisacodyl can generally be taken with most other food or medicines. Space apart antacid, milk and dairy products by at least one hour if you are using bisacodyl tablets.

This medication should only be used for a short period of time. Check with your healthcare professional if your constipation does not go away.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the dose if it is too near to your next dose. Then take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.
Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing into the rubbish chute or bin.
