Transtelephonic Electrocardiogram (ECG) - What it is
The Transtelephonic Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test where the electrical signals of the heart is recorded using a portable device. The ECG is later transmitted via corded telephone to a receiving centre at the NHCS.
The test is ideal for the detection of infrequent/transient
abnormal heart rhythms
. It is also useful for patients who complain of recurrent fainting spells.

Is the test safe?
There are no direct risks involved in this test. However, some patients may get experience some discomfort or skin irritation due to the prolonged use of electrodes for the recording of the ECG.
How is the test done?
You will be taught on how to use the ECG recorder on the day of your appointment.
The device will be loaned to you for 2 weeks. Different models of device are available and the Cardiac Physiologist/Technologist will get you a device that is most appropriate for your needs. You will be provided with a small portable device with or without wires for attachment to your chest. When the device is handed to you, you are required to sign a loan agreement upon which you agree to bear the cost of the device if it is lost or damaged. It is advisable that you handle the device with care.
If there are no recordings / transmission during the initial 2 weeks, the loan may be extended for another 2 weeks. This extension is subject to the availability of the device and you will be charged for its extended use.
When you experience symptoms (e.g. palpitations, giddiness or chest pain), activate the device immediately. If you are not wearing the device when the symptoms occur, you must quickly set up the connection and activate the device immediately.
During recording, please remember to record the date and time of the symptoms. When it is convenient, please transmit your ECG as soon as possible to the NHCS receiving centre with the telephone number (Tel: 6844 9178) as instructed by the Cardiac Physiologist/Technologist.
The recording will be processed and analysed. A doctor will then interpret and discuss the results with you at your next follow-up consultation.
Preparations before test
No fasting or admission to the hospital is required.
You may continue with your current medication (unless advised otherwise).
You will be taught on how to use the ECG recorder on the day of your appointment, which will take approximately 30-45 minutes. Please set aside sufficient time on your schedule.
You will need to return the device at the end of the 2-week loan period. Someone else can return the device on your behalf.
