"Nurses perform many different roles in Radiology. We assist doctors during procedures such as insertion of the peripherally inserted central catheter into patients who require long-term antibiotic or liver cancer patients who are not suitable to undergo surgery and need chemotherapy drugs to be injected directly to the tumour.
Besides educating the patients on how to take care of the catheter, we also do pre-procedure assessment. We work closely with the Radiologists and Radiographers, to ensure that patients receive the best care and are safe in our hands.
Looking back, I think I will always remember my mentor, Sister Wong. She is someone I respect and look up to. Sister Wong is like a walking reference book. When I first joined the department, I was amazed by how she was able to remember the exact length and shape of different wires and catheters, the type of coils for various types of procedures, etc. Even Radiologists would go to her for advice!"
