Physiotherapy Services
Physiotherapists are health care professionals who evaluate and treat people with health problems resulting from injury or disease.
Physiotherapists assess joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, function of heart and lungs, and performance of activities required in daily living, among other responsibilities. Treatment includes therapeutic exercise, cardiovascular endurance training, manual therapy and electrophysical modalities.

(A) Outpatient Physiotherapy Services
Outpatient services are provided at the Rehabilitative Services Department on Level 2 and the Changi Sports Medicine Centre on Level 1.
The outpatient physiotherapy services provided at level 2 Rehabilitative Services include:
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
- Specialised management of common spine and limb sprains, strains and injuries. Management includes manual therapy, therapeutic exercises and electrophysical modalities.
Back Exercise Classes
- Exercise class specifically designed for low back pain individuals who want to improve their trunk/core stability. The class include mat works and gym ball workouts.
Neck and Back Classes
- A lecture cum practical class for individuals who want to learn more about the cause of their neck and back pain, self management, preventive measures and ergonomics.
- Specialised classes utilising Pilates concept and equipment are also available to help patients strengthen their trunk muscles and improve their core stability.
Knee Classes
- An exercise class specifically designed for individuals with ligamentous and meniscal injuries of the knee. The class is also suitable for individuals who have undergone surgical repair of their knee injuries.
Hydrotherapy Classes
- An exercise class conducted in a dedicated and specialised hydrotherapy pool. The pool has a moveable platform which can vary its depth. The water is also heated for increased therapeutic effect. The exercises which use the properties of water, are designed to rehabilitate patients with back pain, knee and shoulder conditions, stroke and stress.
Clinical Pilates Classes
- An alternative form of exercise class for low back pain patients. The exercises taught are based on Pilates principles and prescribed according to the patient’s condition. In this way, we ensure that the exercises taught are safe and beneficial to those with low back pain. Pilates reformers are also used to enhance the exercises.
Manipulative Physiotherapy
- This a very specialised area of physiotherapy using joint manipulative techniques and specific exercises to treat patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Physiotherapists providing this service have post-graduate training in manipulative physiotherapy. They apply clinical reasoning skills and specialised techniques to maximise outcome and benefits for patients.
Stroke Rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation is available for patients who are recovering from an acute episode of stroke.

The outpatient physiotherapy services provided at level 1 Changi Sports Medicine Centre Physiotherapy include:
Sports Physiotherapy
- Specialised rehabilitation and exercise therapy for the sportsman returning to sports after injuries
Weight Loss Management Classes
- A medically planned exercise programme designed for individuals who want to lose weight.
Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme
- A medical supervised exercise programme for individuals recovering from a heart attack

Occupational Therapy Services
Occupational therapists help patients to develop new skills or maintain existing ones so that they can continue to live independently despite illness or disability. Patients learn (or relearn) many of the "ordinary" tasks that are performed every day at home, at work, at school, and in the community.
The aim is to help them establish a lifestyle that is as independent, productive, and as satisfying as possible. Some conditions seen by occupational therapists are stroke, orthopaedic conditions, social and emotional difficulties, and age related problems. Therapists also provide services to prevent injuries and promote wellness.

Speech Therapy Services
Our Speech Therapy Clinic covers assessment and therapy in the areas of communication and swallowing disorders, specifically related to language, speech, , voice and swallowing for adults. The speech therapy service includes:
- Neurological / Stroke Rehabilitation
- Voice Clinic
- Swallowing Assessment and Management
Neurological / Stroke Rehabilitation
Assessment and therapy are provided for patients with difficulties in speech, language, social communication, or swallowing due to conditions such as stroke, head injury, Parkinson's Disease, dementia and other neurological diseases.
Voice Clinic
We investigate and monitor patients' voice problems.

Functional Voice Assessment and Therapy
This includes a detailed interview on the source of voice problems, objective measurement and recording of vocal cord performance, and treatment programmes such as vocal cord exercises.

Videostroboscopy
This procedure is conducted jointly with the ENT Specialist to examine voice problems such as persistent voice hoarseness.
Swallowing Assessment & Management
These services are available for those with swallowing problems:

Videofluoroscopic Study of Swallowing (VFSS)
It is an X-ray procedure jointly conducted with the Radiologist to further investigate the causes of swallowing problems, to determine the level of safety in swallowing , and determine the types of techniques to enhance swallowing ability.

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES)
This examination is jointly conducted with the ENT Specialist involving nasoendoscopy to view the throat structures responsible for voice production and swallowing.

Dysphagia Table
This is a group session to monitor patients' feeding and swallowing ability as well as to provide on feeding precautions for care givers. Meals will be provided for patients to practise the swallowing techniques recommended to minimise risk of choking.
Speech therapy services are by appointment only. We require a medical referral from patients who wish to use our services.
