Spinal Stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal which contains the nerve roots and spinal cord. This may increase pressure on the neural structures.
Causes and Risk Factors:
Spinal stenosis is typically caused by structural changes related to spondylosis. However, it can also result from herniated discs, thickened ligaments, injuries, tumours, or congenital conditions. The condition is more common in individuals over the age of 50.
Signs and Symptoms
Back pain
Muscle weakness and/or numbness/tingling, if nerve compression is significant
Balance issues and loss of bladder or bowel control in severe cases
Dull ache or cramping in one or both legs during prolonged walking or standing
Diagnosis:
X-Ray
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Computed Tomography (CT) scans
Treatment may include:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Physiotherapy
Epidural Steroid Injections
Surgical Intervention for patients not responding to conservative measures
