A slipped disc, also known as a herniated disc, occurs when the soft, gel-like centre of a spinal disc protrudes through a weakness in its outer layer. This can result in sudden and severe lower back pain.
Causes and Risk Factors:
Slipped discs are most common between the ages of 30 and 50. Several factors can increase the risk, including:
Occupations requiring heavy lifting
Jobs involving prolonged sitting
Participation in weight-bearing sports
Smoking
Obesity
Advancing Age
Signs and Symptoms
Lower back pain with numbness and tingling in the buttocks, legs or fett
Difficulty bending or straightening the back
Muscle weakness in the legs
Pain the may worsen with coughing or sneexing
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is primarily clinical, with symptoms often resolving within a few weeks. If symptoms persist or worsen, an MRI may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment may include:
Gentle exercises to improve mobility
Pain management with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Physical rehabilitation
Spinal injections
Nerve ablation in severe cases
