A shin splint is the general name given for injuries relating to pain at the front of the lower leg. Shin splints is not a diagnosis in itself but a description of symptoms.
Causes and Risk Factors:
Inflammation of the periosteum (tibia sheath)
Muscle traction on the periosteum causes shin pain and inflammation
Indicators of Shin Splints:
Tenderness on the inner shin
Pain eases with rest but returns during running
Lumps or bumps may be felt on the shin
Self-Care:
Rest to heal
Apply ice to reduce pain and swelling
Stretch lower leg muscles, especially the tibialis posterior
Use shock-absorbing insoles
Treatment may include:
Anti-inflammatory medication
Running style analysis for foot issues
Sports physiotherapy: stretching, strengthening, taping, and electrotherapy
