Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), also known as Anterior Knee Pain Syndrome or Runner’s Knee, is characterised by pain around the kneecap. It is commonly seen in runners and active individuals.
Causes and Risk Factors:
Occurs when the patella does not track properly along the femur during knee movement
Repetitive deep knee bending
Flat feet
Technical errors in running or sports
Tight iliotibial band
Muscle imbalances
Weakness in thigh and gluteal muscles
Signs and Symptoms:
Aching or sharp pain at the front of the knee, often triggered by bending the knee, using stairs, or sitting for extended periods with the knee bent
Diagnosis:
Comprehensive history and physical examination
Imaging studies, including X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scansGait assessment while running on a treadmill
Treatments may include:
Physiotherapy
Modification of physical activities
Podiatry consultation
Surgery, if necessary
Stretches
The following exercises can be used to condition your body. Please warm-up before each exercise. For all the exercises, perform 15-20 repetitions for each side. Then repeat 2-3 times. Perform these exercises at least 2-3 days every week but your exercise days should not be consecutive.
