Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

Synonym(s):

The rotator cuff consists of four small muscles that encircle the shoulder, playing a crucial role in stabilising the shoulder joint and facilitating its movement.

Injuries to the rotator cuff can result from wear and tear, improper lifting techniques, or falls. These injuries can range from minor tendon strains to partial or complete tears.

Causes and Risk Factors:
Irritation and inflammation of the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles
Overuse of the shoulder

Signs and Symptoms:
Sudden onset of pain and restricted shoulder movement
Weakness in the shoulder, particularly if a tear is present, potentially affecting sleep and daily activities

Diagnosis:
Comprehensive history and physical examination
Imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans

Treatment may include:
Rest
Pain relief with medications like paracetamol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Physiotherapy to restore strength and mobility
Steroid injections to reduce tendon inflammation
Shockwave therapy
Surgical intervention if necessary
