Singapore, 15th May 2022 – For the first time in Singapore, buildings and landmarks around the Marina Bay Water Promenade (see Annex for full list of buildings) will be lit up in green and blue to raise awareness of Neurofibromatosis, a commonly undiagnosed genetic condition. The initiative spearheaded by National Cancer Centre Singapore, is to mark World Neurofibromatosis (NF) Awareness Month in May.
Affecting millions worldwide, Neurofibromatosis is a genetic condition that causes tumours to grow on nerves in the spinal cord, brain and other parts of the body. The most common type of NF is NF1, which is estimated to occur in one in every 2,000 – 3,000 individuals globally. The tumours are usually non-cancerous but can sometimes become cancerous. Early screening and diagnosis allows timely management and treatment of symptoms and complications, contributing to better outcomes for NF1 patients. For more info on NF1, click

‘Shine a Light on NF’ is a global movement that raises awareness about Neurofibromatosis in the community by lighting up buildings, bridges, monuments and other landmarks in blue and green.

Joining the global movement to ‘Shine a Light on NF’ is National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). On 14 May, NF1 patients and their families were joined by staff from NCCS’ Cancer Genetics Service to view the light up around the Marina Bay Water Promenade. A public forum1 on Neurofibromatosis was also held on the same day with healthcare professionals from NCCS sharing on latest medical and research updates and tips to manage the genetic condition.
