High-throughput, Single-microbe Genomics – Microbe-seq
Abstract
In this presentation, I will introduce Microbe-seq, a culture free, high-throughput single-microbe genomics method. This method integrates multiple droplet microfluidics procedures and customized bioinformatics pipelines. It could obtain genomic information of thousands of single microbes from complex microbial communities, assemble high-quality strain-level genomes, and discover new uncultured strains. In turn, horizontal gene transfer (HGT), host-phage association, functional genes and metabolic pathways can be studied at the strain level. This method is applicable to samples with complex microbial communities, such as feces, soil and marine, and possibly would become a mainstream technique for future microbiological studies.
Biography
Wenshan Zheng is the co-founder and CTO of MobiDrop, Inc. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Peking University. He then obtained a PhD at Harvard University in Prof. David Weitz’s lab. During his PhD, Dr. Zheng co-invented Microbe-seq, a high-throughput, single-microbe genomics method. Dr. Zheng is currently leading the R&D team at MobiDrop to develop solutions for high-throughput biological assays using droplet microfluidics. Products developed by the team includes MobiNova single-cell sequencing system and MobiMicrobe single-microbe sequencing service platform.
