Surgical
Options For Weight Management
Bariatric or Obesity Surgery is suitable for:
- the morbidly obese with BMI >35 (based on BMI
values for Asians)
- the severe obese with BMI >30 (based on BMI values
for Asians) and other medical complications of obesity
such as sleep apnoea, diabetes, hypertension and joint
problems.
- those who are unsuccessful in any weight reduction
attempts with or without medical supervision.
The most common type of bariatric surgery is the Laparoscopic
Adjustable Gastric Banding (lap-banding), a ring device
with an adjustable balloon.
As it can be performed laparoscopically, it avoids
a large wound and the patient usually returns to work
within 1- 2 weeks. Treatment can be individualised and
the Band adjusted according to person’s needs.
It can be removed if the need arises.
