The Asthma Support Group at Changi General Hospital counsels patients with Bronchial Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COLD), Cor Pulmonate, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Bronchitis and other medical conditions relating to asthma. Our healthcare professionals are always ready to assist you.

The Asthma Support Group also conducts community health talks on asthma care. We aim to increase awareness in the community, by achieving the following objectives:

  • To educate patients on the basic patho-physiology of Bronchial Asthma
  • To provide information on the principles of Asthma Management
  • Teach patients to recognize the warning signs of severe asthma
  • To assess inhaler techniques- teach and demonstrate correct techniques
    and return demonstration by patients
  • Motivate and encourage the use of inhalers
  • Teach patients to use and monitor peak flow readings
  • Monitor response to treatment and advice on allergen avoidance
  • Teach effects of asthma medication
  • Educate and counsel family members

What Counselling Involves

Patients and families are kindly requested to bring their inhalers and case sheet to the counselling sessions. Asthma education protocol is used as a standard way in documentation and guide to counselling and educating the patients. The basic patho-physiology of asthma and aims of treatment are taught, along with symptom recognition and warning signs of worsening asthma.

Our support group also explains the use and care of inhalers and asthmatic devices such as a spacer or aerochamber, and Peak Flow Monitoring. They also discuss allergy trigger factors, asthma medications and an Emergency Management Plan, in the event of a severe asthma attack. Improvement of the home environment is also addressed, as environmental factors play an important role in asthma management. Coping with asthma emotionally, psychologically and physically is difficult, but with the assistance and advice from our support group, we aim to make asthma management simple and worry-free.

Counselling Times

Counselling is available from Monday to Saturday, except public holidays. Counselling is conducted in the afternoon between 2:00pm – 4:00pm.

It is conducted at Level 5 Team Conference Room, where we have placebo inhalers for demonstration, information pamphlets and asthma-related forms.
