CGH Hepatobiliary Service provides
evaluation and management of a
diverse range of conditions relating
to the liver, gallbladder and the
pancreas. Together with our
Department of Gastroenterology,
we provide monitoring of patients
with chronic liver conditions such as
Hepatitis B.
Management of gallstones and biliary duct stones
Many patients who suffer from bloatedness, upper
abdominal pain and feeling of ingestion are actually
suffering from gallstones. In more serious cases, these
stones may enter the biliary duct and cause obstruction
leading to jaundice (a yellowing of the eyes and skin) and
infection. We can provide:
- Ultrasound scans of the hepatobiliary system
- MRI and MRCP
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticogram
(ERCP)
- Endoscopic ultrasound
(in conjunction with the gastroenterologists)
Treatment options we provide include:
- Gallbladder surgery for gallstones
In many instances, this can be carried out via laparoscopy
(keyhole surgery)
- Biliary bypass
- Intro-operative cholangiogram
(both laparoscopic and open surgery)
- Bile duct exploration
Evaluation and management of liver masses / cancers
Liver cysts and tumours can present as pain, abdominal
distension and/or masses in the right upper abdomen.
Often, there are no symptoms but they are discovered
incidentally during investigations. The hepatobiliary service
provides evaluation of these masses and, where necessary,
recommends the appropriate treatment. This may include:
- Liver resections
(open or laparoscopic surgery)
- Laparoscopic treatment of liver cysts
- Open and laparoscopic drainage of liver abscesses
/ infected cysts
To aid us in performing liver surgery, we have acquired a
range of advanced technologies, including:
- Intraoperative ultrasound
- Harmonic scalpel
- Cusa desiccator
- Radio-frequency ablation
- Idocyninegreen test for pre-operative assessment
Evaluation and management of pancreatic conditions / tumors
Our hepatobiliary service also manages a range of
pancreatic conditions, including:
- Acute pancreatitis
- Chronic pancreatitis
- Pain management
- Pancreatic resection
- Pancreatic drainage surgery
- Surgery for pancreatic cysts and tumours
- Whipple's operation
- Pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy
- Spleen-preserving distal pancreatectom
