The Changi General Hospital Clinical Measurement Unit conducts various tests to assess heart, lung, brain, nerve, muscle and urinary functions. These tests which are available on doctors' requests, are useful in the diagnosis of disease conditions.

Tests Relating to the Heart

We conduct cardiac investigations are important in the diagnosis of heart conditions such as coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscles), valvular heart disease (disease of the heart valves), arrhythmias (heart disease associated with abnormal heart rhythms), hypertension etc.

The tests include:

  • 12 Lead Electrocardiography
  • 24 Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
  • 24 Hour Ambulatory Holter Monitoring
  • Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography
  • Echocardiography
  • Pacemaker Checks
  • Signal Averaging Electrocardiography
  • Tilt Test
  • Exercise Stress Echocardiography
  • Treadmill Exercise Test
  • Transoesophageal Echocardiography
  • Transtelephonic Electrocardiography
Tests Relating to the Lungs

Lung function tests are helpful in diagnosing conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease. These tests are also useful in monitoring progress and in assessing response to treatment. Lung function tests are required in some patients for evaluating their fitness for surgery. These tests include:

  • Spirometry
  • Lung Volumes
  • Diffusion Capacity
  • Exercise Challenge
  • Methacholine Challenge

Tests Relating to Nerves and Muscles

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and needle electromyography (EMG) play a central role in the evaluation of neuromuscular disorder. These tests are often used to diagnose disorders of peripheral nervous system. In addition, these studies can also provide useful diagnostic information in disorders of the central nervous system.
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

Test Relating to the Brain

Electro encephalography is the neurophysiological measurement of the electrical activity of the brain by recording from electrodes placed on the scalp. The resulting traces are represented by brain waves. This procedure is used to diagnose epilepsy, brain damage and other neurological problems.
  • Encephalography(EEG)

Test Relating to Urinary System

Other Test

  • Carbon-13 Urea Breath Test

Please note that only CGH doctors can refer these tests for our inpatients and outpatients, except for 12 leads ECG.
