Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Prevalence of PTSD

The prevalence of PTSD among those exposed to catastrophic events ranges from 3% to 58%. This is because some types of events are more traumatic than others. The risk of PTSD is higher among prisoners of war, crime victims and victims of prolonged, repeated interpersonal violence such as physical or sexual abuse and political torture.

Treatment

For many patients with PTSD, a number of treatment options are available. Treatment modalities can be broadly categorized into psychological and pharmacological (medications) treatments. Antidepressants and mood stabilizers as well as anxiety-reducing medications can ease the symptoms of depression, flashbacks, hyperarousal and sleep problems. Together with psychotherapy including cognitive behavioural therapy, these are often offered in combination to provide an effective therapeutic intervention for each individual.

These treatments can restore a sense of control and diminish the power of past events over current experience. The sooner people are treated, the more likely they are to recover from a traumatizing experience. Appropriate therapy can also help those with chronic trauma-related disorders.

What you can do to help yourself?

  1. Give yourself permission and time to grieve. You are suffering from a loss.
  2. Focus on your strengths and coping skills.
  3. Redefine your priorities and focus your energy and resources on those priorities.
  4. Set small realistic goals to help tackle obstacles.
  5. Eat healthy meals and exercise. This can help relieve stress.
  6. Get enough rest to increase your reserve strength.
  7. Acknowledge unresolved issues and use the hurt and pain as a motivator to make
    the necessary changes to heal.
  8. Talk to people. Talk is healing medicine.
  9. Accept support from loved ones and friends.
  10. Avoid alcohol and illicit drugs. These tend
to give rise to more problems rather than
    help.

What you can do to help someone suffering from PTSD?

  1. Listen and empathize. A sympathetic listener is important.
  2. Spend time with the traumatized person. There is no substitute for personal presence.
  3. Offer assistance and sympathy. Voiced support is important.
  4. Don't tell traumatized people that they are "lucky it wasn't worse". Traumatized people
are not consoled by such statements.
  5. Tell them instead that you are sorry such an event has occurred and that you want to
    understand and assist them.
  6. Respect a family member's need for privacy and private grief.
