For many patients with PTSD, a number of treatment options
are available. Treatment modalities can be broadly categorized
into psychological and pharmacological (medications)
treatments. Antidepressants and mood stabilizers as
well as anxiety-reducing medications can ease the symptoms
of depression, flashbacks, hyperarousal and sleep problems.
Together with psychotherapy including cognitive behavioural
therapy, these are often offered in combination to provide
an effective therapeutic intervention for each individual.
These treatments can restore a sense of control and
diminish the power of past events over current experience.
The sooner people are treated, the more likely they
are to recover from a traumatizing experience. Appropriate
therapy can also help those with chronic trauma-related
disorders.
