Myopia

Myopia - Caused By Hereditary And Environmental Factors

We cannot change our genes but we can do something about the environmental factors to lower the risk of rapidly progressive myopia in children. A very important factor is too much near work.

It is important to:

  1. Restrict time spent on near work eg. Reading, computers. Use a timer if necessary and limit yourself to 30 to 45 minutes of near work then rest the eyes. Look out the window in far distance. Try not to start your child on computer games, as it can be addictive and difficult to limit the time spent.
  2. Encourage outdoor activities rather than TV watching. Cycling, fishing, tennis and running train the eye to relax and focus for distance.
  3. Remind your child to remove the spectacles if he/she can read well without them. Have adequate lighting (whether yellow or white) which is not too bright to cause discomfort. Shortsighted (near-sighted or myopic) people have clearer vision for near than for far. Their spectacles are meant for distance vision. Therefore, if your child can see well enough at home, spectacles need not be worn at all except for watching TV and for school and outdoor activities. However, please note that this cannot be applied if the child also has high astigmatism or Amblyopia (lazy eye). He/she will then require glasses constantly.

Recommendation On Change Of Spectacles

There is often no need to check the eyes and change the spectacles every year in a school going child if he/she:

  1. Does not complain about not seeing clearly.
  2. Does not screw up his/her eyes or slant his/her head to look at things eg. when watching TV.

Sometimes it may be preferable to wear under-corrected spectacles for myopia, especially since the majority of the child’s time is spent on near to intermediate distance viewing. This does not strain the eyes as the vision is still clear. If your child is above six years old and does not have Amblyopia (lazy eye), his/her eyes will not be damaged if he/she does not wear his/her spectacles constantly.
