Special Care After Your Ear Surgery

Special Care After Your Ear Surgery

You should lie comfortably with your head on the pillow, with the operated ear facing up. You may feel giddy or feel like vomiting. Please let your nurse know. Medication will be given to relieve the
symptoms. You’ll also be given an analgesic (painkiller) to relieve any discomfort of the ear.

If you have a head bandage, it will be removed the next day for a lighter dressing. Cotton wool at the entrance of the ear will be changed as well. Take care that you do not remove any dressing which has been inserted into the ear canal itself.

Avoid blowing your nose to prevent damage to the repaired ear drum. And try to avoid turning or bending your head suddenly.

Stitches are usually removed on the seventh day.

After discharge

It’s important that you observe the following after your discharge:

DO

  • Keep the ear clean and dry. Please be careful when rinsing your hair.
  • Change the cotton wool at the entrance of the ear if it becomes wet.
  • Travel on the MRT or bus if you need to.

DON’T

  • Swim, drive or take a flight until the doctor gives an approval.
  • Blow your nose until your ear is completely healed.
  • Cover your nose or mouth when you have to sneeze or cough. Do so with your mouth open.
  • Allow water to enter the ear canal when washing your hair - it will cause an ear infection.
