What is Running Economy Test?
While it is important to develop your running engine (with the aid of VO2 max Test), it is also important for the energy generated to be used efficiently. In essence, running economy (RE) is a gauge of your energy consumption (fuel consumption).
Why Do the Running Economy Test?
Good RE is essential in endurance events, such as a marathon, when a person’s energy store (fuel store) is limited. RE can be measured through analysing the gases that you breathe when you are running over a range of speeds.
By matching the speed to your oxygen usage (VO2) at these speeds, it can also help you estimate your race pace, with a lower VO2 used for a longer race. The RE test can also be used inconjunction with gait analysis to monitor improvements in running economy after changing your running gait.
Who can take the test?
The test is targeted for seasoned runners looking to improve their running performance through a systematic method. Before undergoing the test, you need to complete the Exercise Test Readiness Form to check for any health and safety-related issues.
In the event where health problems that may make the test unsafe are detected, you may need to consult a doctor before undergoing the test.
How will I feel during the test?
Towards the end of the test, you may experience breathlessness and fatigue. These feelings are usually transient. You can, however, request to terminate the test at any time. If you have any concerns about your health, please consult your doctor before undergoing the test.
What are the risks?
Some of the possible risks of a running economy test include chest pain, allergic reactions, abnormal heart rhythm, abnormal blood pressure response, heart attack and stroke. However, the chance of this happening in an average patient is approximately 1 in 10,000.
