What is VO2max Test?
VO2max refers to the maximal amount of oxygen consumed by our body during maximal exercise. VO2max Test measures our maximal oxygen consumption and predicts aerobic threshold (AT), which are important indicators of endurance fitness.
The test comprises treadmill running with increasing intensity accompanied by a gas analysis conducted with a mouth-piece and an attached nose-clip. Running will continue until you reach the point of maximal effort.
Why VO2max Test? Most of us are
unsure of the right intensity we should be training at.
Training at a randomly selected intensity can lead to
under-training or over-training.
VO2max test measures our
maximum oxygen consumption and aerobic threshold (AT),
which are important indicators of endurance fitness. In
addition, our fitness level changes over time, so there
is a need to adjust the training intensity according to
the indicators measured.
How can I
benefit from the test?
Without an objective measurement of our fitness level, most of us are unsure of the right intensity we should be training at. Training at a randomly selected intensity can lead to under-training or over-training.
Knowing your maximal oxygen intake and aerobic threshold allows you to train at an intensity that is specific to your level of fitness, and hence, maximises your training benefits. In addition, our fitness level changes over time, so there is a need to adjust the training intensity according to the indicators measured.
Are there other similar tests?
Yes, there are other tests, such as Conconi test or tests which do not require maximal effort (submaximal tests). These tests derive VO2max and AT based on equations, which entail assumptions that can introduce errors in the results.
The VO2max Test provides direct measurement of your VO2 and aerobic threshold as opposed to estimates based on submaximal tests.
Who can take the
test?
The test is suitable for both professional athletes and sedentary individuals interested in starting on an exercise programme. Before undergoing the test, you need to complete the VO2 max Test Readiness Form to check for any health and safety-related issues.
In the event where health problems that may make the test unsafe are detected, you may need to consult a doctor before undergoing the test.
How will I feel during the test?
Towards the end of the test, you may experience breathlessness and fatigue. These feelings are usually transient. You can, however, request to terminate the test at any time. If you have any concerns about your health, please consult your doctor before undergoing the test.
What are the risks?
Some of the possible risks of a treadmill exercise stress test include chest pain, allergic reactions, abnormal heart rhythm, abnormal blood pressure response, heart attack and stroke. However, the chance of this happening in an average patient is approximately 1 in 10,000.
Will I have my
report on the same day after I perform the
test?
Yes.
What should I do?
Is this a pre-participation screening test?
No, it is not. The VO2max Test is essentially a test of endurance and does not screen for health problems. If you like to have a health-screening test before participating in endurance sports, please see our Athlete Medical Screening Packages on our website.
How should I prepare for the test?
The test will usually be held in the morning. You should be adequately hydrated and have a light breakfast about 1-2 hours before the test. Please come in sports attire and bring along your identity card on your appointment date. If you don’t feel well on the test day (e.g. cold, flu, muscle fatigue), you can call our appointment hotline at (65) 6850 3333 to change your test date.
