CGH Opens CSMC's Medical Wing
and Specialist Eye Clinics

Changi Sports Medicine Centre (CSMC), the biggest multidisciplinary sports medicine centre in Singapore, opened a new medical wing on 11 Nov 2005. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports officially opened the CSMC Medical Wing as well as the expanded Specialist Eye Clinics.

CGH Specialist Eye Clinic is a partnership with doctors from Singapore National Eye Centre to bring in their expertise in different subspecialties. With the wide spectrum of eye services, CGH renovated and moved the eye clinics to bigger premises at our Wards Lobby in Dec 2004.

In 2003, CSMC had about 7000 patient consultations and the number of patients seen has been increasing steadily. From Jan 2005 to just Oct 2005, CSMC received about 12500 patients. This was an increase of more than 70%. To serve our patients better, CSMC was expanded to provide more gym space and a new medical wing was added with 4 consultation rooms, a dietitian room and a treatment room for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy and diagnostic ultrasound services.

"Sports Medicine and Sports Science used to be services available only to elite athletes. The integrated Changi Sports Medicine Centre aims to provide a one-stop service to benefit a broader segment of our population, including elite and recreational athletes, disabled athletes, active but non-competitive individuals, those with medical conditions that can benefit from exercise, performing artists, and sedentary individuals who hope to be more active,” said Dr Ben Tan, Consultant Sports Physician and Head of CSMC.

In conjunction with the opening, CSMC was the first in Singapore to unveil the Helmas fitness testing system. The Helmas machine has 8 test stations to assess and electronically record an individual’s strength, power, aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity, flexibility, proprioception (position awareness) and agility.

The results are benchmarked against population norms, identifying areas of weaknesses that the subjects need to improve on. Besides helping to develop all-round fitness and hence enhance performance, it also serves to refine the rehabilitation program for injured or post-operative patients, and to allow objective and realistic goal setting and monitoring of progress.

Patients with medical conditions like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, and high cholesterol will also benefit as the system makes exercise prescription safer and more accurate for such populations. The Helmas fitness testing is available to the public at introductory prices ranging from $30 for 1 station to $115 for 8 stations.

"There are many sedentary individuals with chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, stroke, and obesity, who have been instructed by their doctors to start exercising. Unfortunately, many of them do not know where to start. The commercial gyms may turn them away because these gyms may not be equipped or comfortable in dealing with such individuals. CSMC provides Sports Medicine support for this large population of individuals. They will benefit not only from injury management and prevention, but also from pre-participation screening, exercise testing and prescription as they are at higher risk of sudden death and injuries during exercise,” said Dr Ben Tan.

  About CSMC

Sports Medicine Service started as a weekly sports clinic back in 2000. CGH introduced Sports Medicine to support the health needs of an active population as more people exercise regularly, and exercise plays an increasingly important role in the management and prevention of many lifestyle diseases.

Changi Sports Medicine Centre started operations at Wards
Lobby, Level 1, in January 2003. It was officially opened on 12 September 2003 by Mr Lee Yock Suan, then Minister, Prime Minister’s Office and MP for East Coast GRC. The new Medical Wing took 18 weeks of renovation which increased the floor area from 269 to 671 square metres.

With the tagline: “Recovery and Beyond”, the team at CSMC not only helps the individual to recover quickly from sports injuries but also to safely return the individual to his or her previous level of sports. CSMC also gets previously sedentary people active, in a safe and effective way, thereby preventing and managing lifestyle diseases.

Staffed by a full complement of sports physicians, sports orthopaedic surgeons, allied health professionals and sports
