CGH ENT Surgeon Awarded Prestigious
Yahya Cohen Memorial Lectureship

Dr Hsu Pon Poh, Consultant ENT surgeon and Head of Clinical Trials and Research Unit, has been awarded the 10th Yahya Cohen Memorial Lectureship by the College of Surgeons, Singapore on 3 July 2005.

Dr Hsu presented his paper "Clinical Predictors in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Patients with Computer Assisted Quantitative Videoendoscopic Upper Airway Analysis" at the 39th Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine. The lecturer is awarded with a gold medal and a certificate.

The 1994 Chapter of Surgeons established the Yahya Cohen Memorial Lecture in honour of the outstanding contributions to the development of surgery in Singapore by Dr Yahya Cohen, the 1st Chairman of the Chapter of Surgeons and a past Master of the Academy. The Lectureship is held annually and takes place at an event organised by the Chapter of Surgeons. The award is given in recognition of academic excellence and contribution to medical science.

Past recipients of this prestigious award include A/Prof London Lucien Ooi, Surgical oncologist (3rd Yahya Cohen Lecture) and A/Prof Au Eong Kah Guan, Ophthalmologist (6th Yahya Cohen Lecture).

To diagnose the obstructive site for a patient suffering from OSA is not easy. Often the problem is that the normal tissue is lax, and therefore is obstructive. As it is difficult to see, doctors cannot measure and pinpoint the obstruction.

The method that Dr Hsu developed through his research enables doctors to objectively measure the obstruction without subjecting patients through x-ray, and can be done in the clinic.

With this computer-assisted videoendoscopic technique, diagnosis is easier and and surgery can therefore be more precise to correct the problem. This is achieved through specialised equipment, software and methodology, which was developed by Dr Hsu and his team. His team members are everyone in ENT, particularly Dr Alvin Tan, Registrar, and Dr Peter Lu.

Dr Hsu had been working on OSA research for many years and his papers had been published in many ENT journals. He also lectured in top universities all over the world, including Oxford University and the University of Georgia in the United States.

Dr Hsu has a passion for research, and has obtained his M.D. (Doctorate in Medicine) from University of Dundee Medical School in December 2003.

Dr Hsu is the world pioneer for this computer assisted videoendoscopic technique. Today, some Australian and American hospitals have learnt this technique from him and are using it. In Singapore, CGH’s ENT clinic is the only clinic to offer this service.
