CGH’s Orthopaedic
Surgery Department has a new Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr
Chang Haw Chong, on 1 November 2004. Dr Chang joined CGH since 1998
and was promoted to Registrar in May 1999 and Associate Consultant
in July 2002.
Dr Chang obtained his MBBS in 1994 and M Med (Surg) in Oct 1998
from National University of Singapore. He also obtained his FRCS
(Glas & Edin) in Jun 1998 and FRCSEd (Orth) in Nov 2001.
Just 5 months ago, Dr Chang was in USA for his HMDP training in
Orthopaedic Sports Medicine from August 2003 to July 2004. He was
attached as a clinical fellow in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine with
University of Louisville in Kentucky USA.
Dr Chang, whose mentor there was Prof David Caborn, did mainly
arthroscopy work involving mainly the knees and shoulders. He was
exposed to complex knee reconstructions and knee osteotomies (surgical
operation to cut a bone to relieve pain in a joint). Dr Chang was
involved in 7 to 8 meniscal transplants during his training. He
was also trained in shoulder arthroscopy including rotator cuff
repairs and labral repairs.
Talking about his experience in the States, Dr Chang said, “Their
practice was 100% outpatient based. Even patients undergoing meniscal
transplants went home the same day.”
Dr Chang completed numerous research projects when he was in Louisville.
His research was mainly in the biomechanical evaluation of bio-fixation
devices eg interference screws, meniscal repair implants and rotator
cuff suture anchors. He co-wrote a book chapter on allograft ACL
reconstruction when he was there. It will be published in the upcoming
edition of Insall and Scott’s Surgery of the Knee, a must-have
book in every Orthopaedic department. He was also the co-author
of a new technique paper on "Single Femoral Socket Double Bundle
ACL Reconstruction" which was recently accepted by |
