| CGH won “Outstanding
Award (Organisation)” at the Sporting Singapore Inspiration
Awards (SSIA) 2004. The SSIA given by Singapore Sports Council (SSC)
is a national accolade that recognises and honours significant contributions
that individuals and organisations have made to promote sports in
our community.
Mr T K Udairam, CEO, CGH received the award from Guest-of-Honour,
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Acting Minister for Community Development,
Youth and Sports on 29 Oct 2004. Dr Ben Tan, Consultant Sports Physician
and Head of Changi Sports Medicine Centre (CSMC) also won the “Outstanding
Individual Award”.
CGH has always been actively promoting a sporting
culture at the workplace as it recognises that keeping fit is the
way towards a healthy lifestyle. The hospital has been winning HPB’s
H.E.A.L.T.H. Gold Awards since 2000, culminating in the Platinum
H.E.A.L.T.H. Award in 2003. It also won the Sports Ace Award Certificate
of Commendation in 2002. The staff at CGH are strongly encouraged
to lead a sporty lifestyle. The staff are given an extra hour off
during lunch to exercise at CSMC. Those who are keen to pick up
a sport are provided training subsidies and paid leave is given
to staff whenever they participate in any sports competition. To
date, almost 2000 employees have participated in various sports
competitions, a marked improvement from 402 in 2000. |

Head of CSMC, Dr Ben Tan is the winner of SSIA's "Outstanding
Individual Award." |

| Dr Ben Tan runs the CGH Weight Management programme
at CSMC and he provided professional inputs in the making of Channel
I’s Weight Loss Reality TV series “Fat to Fit” which
was aired from June to Sept 2004. Dr Ben Tan was also the programme
consultant of Coca Cola’s “Step With It Singapore”
programme to encourage children to increase the levels of physical
activity with the use of stepometers. Dr Ben
Tan also designed an innovative programme, “Fit-in-Steps”
using pedometers to improve the fitness levels of the staff and
nurture the sporting culture within CGH. As Chairperson of CGH’s
Healthy Lifestyle Committee, Dr Ben Tan also established the CGH
Running Club and led staff through the exercise regime thrice a
week.
An ex-national sailor, Dr Tan still participates actively
in corporate races despite his busy clinical schedule. He is a member
of several sports and health committees and is also the President
of Sports Medicine Association of Singapore.
The Singapore Sports Council saluted 53 commendable
sports ambassadors through the SSIA 2004. SSC received more than
1,300 nominations from the public, schools, clubs, community centres,
sports groups and corporate organisations, representing a 30% increase
from last year. |
