Leap Day comes only once every four years and on 29 Feb 2004, Changi General Hospital decided to celebrate this special day with the residents of the east at NECDC Funtasia organised by Northeast Community Development Council.

Held at the open field besides Tampines MRT, there were stage performances (belly dance, dance and sports demonstrations), food stalls, activity booths, food stalls and games for children.

The Dietetics & Catering (D&C) Department, Pharmacy Department, and Changi Sports Medicine Centre set up 3 booths on Sunday from 1:00pm to 9:00pm.

Singaporeans love their food and this was proven true again at the NECDC Funtasia. The D&C Department booth drew crowds with its colourful food display, food pyramid and free Body Mass Index and body fat analysis.

Food models of local delicacies eg. laksa, chicken rice, fish head curry, nasi lemak, nasi briyani were displayed with the corresponding amount of fat in each dish. Eg. a plate of chicken rice has 5 teaspoons of oil. While not advocating the ban against such foods, dietitians advised residents to eat a balanced diet and in moderation. Therefore, treats like chicken rice should be limited to only once a week.

Long queues formed when residents went for their free Body Mass Index and Body Fat analysis. Participants received a report of their measurements and those with undesirable BMI and body fat measurements were counselled by the dietitians.

Special guests including Rear Admiral Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence and MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, MP for Aljunied GRC, Mr Yatiman Yusof, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Information and the Arts and MP for Tampines GRC led by host, Mayor Zainul Abidin Rasheed, NECDC, also visited the D&C booth.

Mr Yatiman Yusoff, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, MITA and MP for Tampines GRC took note that penang laksa has less fat than local laksa. Mrs Magdalin Cheong, Chief Dietitian said, “Local laksa uses coconut milk which is high in fat and made it ‘lemak’” .

So a healthier alternative will be penang laksa as it has only 0.5 teaspoon of fat compared to 6.5 teaspoons of fat for local laksa.

To encourage a lifestyle change, CGH Pharmacy booth sold pedometers at a special price to residents. When worn at the waist, a pedometer measures the number of steps taken. The aim of the pedometer is to promote physical activity and increase one’s step count through walking, stepping, dancing etc. Other health equipment eg. body fat analysers and blood pressure monitors were also available for sale at promotional rates.

For residents who are overweight, they can also join the Changi Weight Management Programme. The 6-month programme run by Changi Sports Medicine Centre aimed to help individuals achieve a healthy weight through exercise, eating wisely and a healthy lifestyle. Mr Mohd Fawzi, Sports Trainer and Ms Tai Kit Ping, Strength & Conditioning Coach were on hand to provide advice on exercise and losing weight.

Colourful food models were displayed to educate the public on the amount of fat in different food.
