Opening of Endoscopy Centre
(L-R): Dr Teo Eng Kiong, Head of Endoscopy Centre, Mdm Ong Ah Khiew, Director of Nursing, Mr T K Udairam, CEO, Prof Fock Kwong Ming, CMB and A/Prof Michael Hoe, Chief of Surgery at the Endoscopy Centre ribbon-cutting ceremony.
CGH’s Endoscopy Centre was officially opened on 28 August 2003. The centre was operational since May 2003.

When the hospital was first opened, its Endoscopy suites resided at Day Surgery. Since Dec 1996, the workload at the hospital has grown steadily. This included day surgeries which account for more than 40 per cent of all surgical procedures carried out in CGH. It was thus appropriate for Day Surgery and Endoscopy services to have their respective facilities.

The new Endoscopy Centre is situated on Level 3 of the wards block occupying 804m2. It is fully equipped to offer our patients a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service. These include diagnostic endoscopic procedures, interventional endoscopic procedures and other procedures such as 24-hour pH studies and percutaneous liver biopsies.

The centre has a patient waiting area, four Endoscopy Suites and 25 beds. With the expanded facilities, doctors can perform more procedures, up to 50 outpatient procedures a day.

“Patient care is enhanced because in the past, patients have to sit and rest after their procedures when we do not have enough beds. This is uncomfortable for patients after sedation as they cannot lie down and rest,” said Dr Teo Eng Kiong, Consultant Gastroenterologist who now heads the Endoscopy Centre.
