Opening of Changi
Sports Medicine Centre
On 12 September 2003, Changi Sports Medicine Centre (CSMC) was officially opened by Mr Lee Yock Suan, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office and MP for East Coast GRC. The first truly multidisciplinary sports centre in Singapore, CSMC started operations in January 2003.

Starting from a Sports Clinic in 2000 running once a week to treat those with sports injuries, the new CSMC now has a full-fledged team comprising of a sports surgeon, sports physician, sports physiotherapist, sports trainer and dietitian meeting the health needs of professional and recreational sportsmen.

Athletes and other active individuals are susceptible to specific problems arising from their physical activities. Sports Medicine encourages safe and enjoyable participation in physical activities by managing sports-related problems. With the tagline “Recovery and Beyond,” CSMC aims to return athletes and other active individuals back to their sporting and physical activities quickly and safely.

Few athletes would refrain from seeking help after sustaining acute and severe injury. However, it may be difficult to differentiate a mild to moderate chronic injury from the normal aches and pains’ that are part and parcel of sports training. It is best to seek help as soon as injuries occur as chronic injuries are harder treat and may lead to long term consequences.

“CSMC offers a full range of services for both recreational and professional sportsmen eg. injury prevention, treatment of sports injuries, performance enhancement, exercise prescription, weight loss programmes etc,” said Dr Tan Jee Lim, Head of CSMC and Consultant Sports Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Patients at the CSMC can look forward to the latest diagnostic technology to achieve accurate diagnosis and biomechanical analysis, a fully equipped gym for rehabilitation and performance enhancement, with a multi-disciplinary team of experts.

CSMC Weight Loss Programme
Besides sports injuries, more people are also seeing the CSMC specialists for the Weight Loss programme. Since April 2003, more than 50 people are now enrolled in the programme.

The six-month CSMC Weight Loss Programme includes 4 Sports Physician consultations, 5 dietary consultations and 11 supervised gym sessions with the Physiotherapist or Sports Trainer over 6 months.

Mr Edmond Branson, 54, joined the programme on 1 September 2003 and exercised twice a week at the gym. In one month, his weight has gone down from 107 to 100 kg. Mr Edmond hoped to lose 20 kg in six months. Branson was an active sportsman representing Singapore Prisons in hockey, squash and soccer tournaments before retirement. After he retired and stopped playing active sports in 1995, he gained weight over the years and had a heart attack in 1997. He was recommended by Dr L Jayaram, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, to join the CSMC Weight Loss Programme.

16-year-old Noor Naffissah Bte Abdul Rahman from Woodsville Secondary School is another patient reaping the benefits of the weight loss programme. Naffisah joined the programme upon referral by her orthopaedic doctor because she suffered knee problems due to her weight. She lost 5 kg from 83 kg to 78kg after just one and a half months.

Sports Physician Consultations
The Sports Physician will assess the patient to identify medical causes of obesity and obesity related conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart problems. Further investigations and referrals may be necessary. Mutually agreed targets will be set, after which dietary and physical activity interventions are then prescribed.

Dietitian Consultations
Our dietitian will analyse a 3-day food record and help patients understand their current eating habits, identifying areas for improvement. Meal plans will then be drawn up to help patients achieve the prescribed daily calorie intake. The dietitian will review the progress at appropriate intervals, imparting essential dietary knowledge and skills like reading food labels.

Supervised gym sessions with Physiotherapist or Sports trainer
Our Physiotherapist or Sports Trainer will implement an individually-tailored exercise prescription from the Sports Physician. The sessions will be conducted at the CSMC gym, with a range of equipment for cross training to avoid overuse injuries. Blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar level monitoring are also available for those with medical problems.

To help patients monitor their daily physical activity level, a complimentary stepometer will be given to count the number of steps they take. The physiotherapist or sports trainer will advise on appropriate targets and recommend methods to raise the step count.
