First Rehabilitation Therapy Course

Dr Balaji Sadasivan, Minister of State (Health), Guest-of-Honour, at the CGH Graduation Ceremony.

Dr Balaji Sadasivan, Minister Of State (Health) presented certificates to the pioneer batch of 7 Therapy Assistants (TAs) at the graduation ceremony on 30 August 2002. Changi General Hospital (CGH) is the first hospital to conduct the Certificate of Competency for Rehabilitation Therapy training (CoC RT) course starting in November 2001.

Conducted at CGH, the 6-month “Certificate of Competency for Rehabilitation Therapy” course includes both theory classes as well as on-the-job training for TAs. This course is developed by Institute of Technical Education (ITE) in consultation with the industry and accredited by ITE.

A Therapy Assistant helps the rehabilitation therapists in administering basic treatment on patients, maintaining the therapy area, equipment and inventory and help provide more personalised care to patients.

One of the graduands, Mr Tahir Jumat, who has 12 years of working experience as a TA, found the CoC RT course
very useful.

“In the past, I always ask patients to do their exercises without knowing which muscles groups are being targeted. Now, I know flexion exercises help patients with knee injuries regain the strength of quadraceps group of muscles and hamstrings after operation. Without appropriate exercises, these patients may have problems balancing in future.”

CGH was also awarded the Approved Training Centre (ATC) status by ITE for this course receiving the ATC Certificate of Accreditation from Mr Aw York Bin, Divisional Director for Industry-based Training, ITE.

Besides the CoC Rehabilitation Therapy course, Dr Balaji also gave out certificates to the hospital’s first batch of 15 Senior Enrolled Nurses (SEN) who completed the 9-month Nursing Course for SENs at the graduation ceremony.

Senior Enrolled Nurses assist patients in their activities of daily living and monitor their conditions. They also help to supervise Enrolled Nurses and Patient Care Assistants in caring for patients.

“The course will empower SENs to take on more care responsibilities. By preparing SENs for expanded roles, the registered nurses can dedicate themselves to nursing work and this will help us better cope with nursing shortage,” said Mr T K Udairam, Chief Executive Officer.

“I would like to urge all healthcare staff to take on the challenge of skills upgrading and continuing education. It is only through such efforts of lifelong learning that we can provide quality healthcare for all Singaporeans in the 21st century,” said Dr Balaji.

CGH is committed to upgrading the skills of its healthcare support staff. Besides the Coc Rehabilitation Therapy course, CGH has also been running accredited courses for Patient Service Assistants (PSA) and Health Care Assistants (HCA) since 1998. The hospital was awarded the ATC status from ITE to conduct courses for its PSAs and HCAs.
