CGH Launches Wellness Programme For Staff

As part of the hospital's healthy lifestyle and wellness programme, Changi General Hospital is helping its staff keep fit by extending membership of the CGH Fitness Centre to staff and launching a Staff Wellness Programme.

To increase awareness and encourage more staff to participate, a special 3-day Staff Wellness roadshow was run from 8 July 2002 at CGH Main Lobby to recruit members. The CGH Fitness Centre also ran a 2-week free trial programme for staff from 15 to 31 July 2002.

CGH Fitness Centre now open for staff.

By signing up as CGH Fitness Centre members, the employees can work out at the gym during lunch times or after work under the supervision of a Sports Trainer. Staff only need to pay a nominal fee of $60 for a 6-month gym membership or $96 for 12-month membership.

Instead of going to commercial gyms, the staff enjoy the facilities of the onsite CGH Fitness Centre conveniently located at the CGH Main Lobby, Level 1. The gym, which occupies an area of 266 square metres, is fully equipped with a good range of exercise equipment (treadmill, leg and arm ergometers, elliptical walker, strength training etc), lockers, shower rooms, toilets and a consultation room.

The Staff Wellness Programme is a weight loss programme tailored for employees with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 27kg/m2. The aim of the holistic programme is to help overweight staff reach their ideal weight though exercising and a healthy diet to prevent and modify health risk factors. Their progress will be reviewed by a team of physiotherapist, occupational therapist and dietitian over 6 months through group counselling sessions.

Staff who have a BMI of more than 30kg/m2 or any existing medical conditions must be seen by a doctor before enrolling for the Wellness Programme. Staff can choose to claim the doctor's consultation fees through the CGH medical benefits scheme.

"I used to be a sportswoman in my school days so I am very conscious of my body. Now that I am out of shape, I am too shy to exercise alone. I feel more comfortable to do exercises in a group. So after the roadshow, I was very motivated and decided to join the Wellness Programme," said Ms Rajinder Kaur, 47, Clerk.

The hospital received an encouraging response from the 3-day roadshow with more than 110 staff members enrolling in the Wellness and Fitness programmes.

The CGH Fitness Centre, which also runs the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Patient Wellness programmes, was opened on 23 March 2002.
