Sure and steady baby steps - CGH's O&G service

The first baby from CGH's outpatient Obstetrics and Gynaecology service has been born at SGH. Haizul Ali Bin Seron is the fourth baby of Mdm Zainah Ahmad, a full-time homemaker, who gave birth on 26 Nov 2001. Mdm Zainah was pleasantly surprised when she learnt that CGH offers O&G outpatient service.

First CGH/SGH baby - Haizul Ali Bin Seron (4 months).

"My friend informed me of the service. So, I went to the clinic to enquire. I was about 3 months pregnant at that time," she said.

Identifying the need for O&G service through its regular patient feedback sessions, CGH started its O&G Specialist Clinic on 21 May 2001. Clinic sessions are run by our visiting specialists from Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH). Besides O&G consultations, patients undergo diagnostic tests for O&G conditions and antenatal classes at CGH. Patients can opt to deliver at either SGH or KKH.

Mdm Zainah is just one of the many patients benefiting from having access to O&G service closer to their homes. CGH's O&G service has proven to be very popular with the eastern community. As of 31 March 2002, less than a year since its opening, a total of 1274 patients, an average of 120 patients per month, have visited both our O&G specialist clinics.

Staying at Blk 122 Simei Street, just a stone's throw from the hospital, Mdm Zainah visited CGH for her regular checkups with Dr Juliana Abu, Associate Consultant. Mdm Zainah, who chose to deliver at SGH, only needed to go to SGH for her obstetric scans at the 20th and 32nd week of her pregnancy.

"The service is good and the staff are very courteous. It's very convenient for people staying in the east. Previously, I have to go down to Outram."

With two girls and two boys aged 11 years old, 8 years old, 6 years old to 4 months old, Mdm Zainah decided to stop at four, but she added, "It's even better if I can give birth at Changi General Hospital."

Although there are no plans to include O&G delivery services in the near future, with the enthusiastic response from patients, the hospital will continue to look into ways to further expand O&G services.

Another patient who benefited from the CGH O&G service was Mdm Manisah Bte Osman. Under the care of Dr Yeap Min Li, Associate Consultant, Mdm Manisah who stays at Tampines St 82 gave birth to a baby girl, Ms Nur Khalisah Binte Kamarulzaman at KKH on 27 Aug 2001. Nur Khalisah, now 8 months old, is the first baby from the CGH O&G outpatient service born at KKH.
