Environmental conservation is important to Changi General Hospital
not only because we care for the environment but also because it
yields real benefits for the hospital. By conserving the environment,
it brings savings to the hospital which helps contribute to better
patient care.
There are many environmental conservation measures
that are implemented in CGH.
These eco-friendly measures which take place in CGH were shared
recently by our CEO Mr T.K. Udairam in a keynote address at the
Singapore Environmental Achievement Award 2001 held at Raffles Hotel
on 8 November 2001.
To conserve the environment, Changi General
Hospital has implemented a multi-pronged approach consisting of
water, energy and waste management. Several water management techniques
have been adopted such as the tuning of taps to prevent excess water
flow by adjusting the lever valve. Other features for reducing water
wastage include installing a conductivity meter at the air-con cooling
tower to regulate "bleed off" water, collecting rainwater for indoor
plants and the usage of megamops. Megamops are giant mops used to
clean the floor and conserve water use at the same time.
Energy and waste management are other important
components of the total green productivity programme. Paper use
is reduced through the implementation of e-forms, whereby staff
applies for leave and request for stationery electronically. Reference
documents are also posted on the intranet for staff use. Paper is
recycled whenever possible.

Believing in conserving the environment,
Changi General Hospital also takes part in community projects such
as adopting the Bedok Reservoir Park.
Various energy management techniques are
also put into place. Air-con thermostats are labelled to indicate
a comfortable air-con temperature setting in the wards. Manual doors
are also replaced with automatic ones to reduce leakage of cold
air.
Through energy conservation measures, CGH
has managed to conserve a total of $1.4m of savings since 1998.
The savings that were derived from these efforts are channeled towards
patient care.
Waste recycling such as the use of compost
heap also helps to conserve the environment and improves on the
soil quality, which allows for a greener and cleaner environment.
Believing strongly in environmental conservation.
CGH staff have always looked for environmentally-friendly operational
processes that help contribute towards this cause.
