Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services
At CGH
|
 |
s |
Since 21 May 2001, O&G Specialists from Singapore General Hospital
(SGH) and KK Womenís & Childrenís Hospital (KKH) have been available
for consultation at the Specialist Clinic in CGH. The hospital will
provide outpatient consultation, diagnostic and laboratory tests for
O&G conditions and antenatal classes. Delivery will however be done
at SGH and KKH.
The outpatient O&G service fills an important need for the community
in the east. Professor Tan Ser Kiat, Singhealth Group CEO said:" The
new O&G SOC service at CGH is another initiative by Singhealth to
provide more integrated services to our patients. O&G specialists
at KKH and SGH are working together with CGH to provide this new service
in response to popular demand by patients living in the eastern sector
of Singapore. The need for an O&G service for the many young families
has been repeatedly raised by patients during regular feedback sessions
at CGH. I am very pleased that CGH, KKH and SGH are pooling their
resources to provide our O&G patients with the level of care that
is most appropriate to their needs where it is most convenient to
them without any compromise in the standard of care delivered."
Associate Professor Fock Kwong Ming, Chairman of CGH Medical Board
added:" For a start, 4 half-day specialist clinic sessions per week
will be conducted to serve both paying and subsidised patients. Specialists
from KKH and SGH will run 2 clinic sessions each. Besides O&G consultations,
patients will be able to undergo diagnostic and laboratory tests for
O&G conditions, and choose to attend antenatal classes at CGH, KKH
or SGH.
Consultations will be by appointment only. In the event of an O&G
emergency, patients should continue to seek treatment at KKH or SGH.
Patients attending the O&G SOC at CGH can opt to deliver their babies
at KKH or SGH. Where inpatient care and specialised treatment are
required, patients will be referred to KKH or SGH."

Dr
Benjamin Tham |

Dr Benjamin Tham, our visiting O&G specialist from KKH,
is a jovial and caring doctor who will put any jittery patients suffering
from "pregnancy nerves" at ease.† Dr Tham obtained his post-graduate
qualifications in MRCOG (UK), MMed O&G (Singapore) and the FRANZCOG
(Fellows of Royal Australian/New Zealand College of O&G).
With a tinkle in his eyes, Dr Tham joked that there is a slight hitch
in being a male gynaecologist in a world of women. "I have to work
harder, exercise greater sensitivity and achieve a higher level of
skills and knowledge to compensate for the disadvantage in gender."
Married with 2 children, Dr Tham added that gynaecology
is his chosen field as it is "a nice blend of medicine and surgery
and that he is happy to be able to do a little of each".
Through his subspecialisation in gynaecological cancer, Dr Tham has
been trained in the more advanced surgical techniques in gynaecological
surgery. Performing a range
of surgeries in gynaecological cancers, patients can have a more comprehensive
treatment plan on all related O&G problems. Dr Tham has special interests
in colposcopy, gynaecological cancer management and providing palliative
care to terminally ill patients.

Dr Fong Yang specialises in both male and female infertility and menopausal
problems. Highly involved in the research of endometriosis, sperm
defects and genetics.
His research work has helped Dr Fong develop a deep understanding
of how different diseases affect fertility and has helped him in combining
the knowledge with surgical techniques.
Dr Fong, our visiting specialist from SGH, believes that the future
of how O&G would unfold is through research to understand the "whys"
& "hows" at the present time. "The challenge is in the research, in
finding out the causes of diseases, and to try to find some answers
even if there aren't any right ones now," he says.
For Dr Fong, O&G is a good mix of surgery, medicine, counselling and
taking care of the whole patient in both the physical and emotional
aspects. As a representative of the Singapore committee to the Royal
College of Obstetricians & Gynaeocologists (UK), Dr Fong is also the
organising chairperson for an international congress on andrology
and male infertility in 2001.
Dr Fong Yang is married and has a 14-month old boy. |

Having graduated from the NUS in 1992, DrYeap had always wanted
to be a Gynaecologist since her medical student days. Having obtained
her MRCOG (UK) in 1997, Dr Yeap, O&G specialist from KKH, treasured
the chance to heal others.
On dealing with infertility and related gynaecological issues, "I
love the joy of participating in the delivery of a newborn,'' she
said. As a gynaecologist, Dr Yeap sees
her work as taking care of the total woman during pregnancy.
For Dr Yeap, her course of duties is to participate in the care of
a woman through her reproductive life, providing the medical care
and psychological support during her pregnancy and delivery of her
baby. Patients can also look to Dr Yeap for the choice of an optimal
contraceptive method, for screening of gynaecological cancers and
for medical help through the symptoms in a woman's pre-menopausal
