TIPS FOR PREVENTING FALLS

Often, an occupational therapist can assist in assessing the home environment of an elderly person in order to highlight high-risk areas and suggest changes according to the person's level of independence. This can be done through a home visit.

To prevent indoor falls, install handrails instead of relying on the soap or towel holder, or sink to support the person's weight. Install grab bars and hand rails at appropriate places.

At the same time, there must be adequate lighting for the elderly to see clearly. Reducing glare is also important to preventing falls. Other tips to be considered include keeping a flashlight at the bedside and using motion-sensitive lighting.

An exercise regime is also beneficial to the elderly person because it conditions the cardiovascular system of the body, builds up strength in the elderly and improves balance. Exercise also helps the elderly person overcome the fear of falling. When done in a group, exercise helps to promote social interaction.
