More than 1,500 diabetic patients of Changi General Hospital (CGH)
received a complimentary copy of the CD-ROM which was launched on
11 November 1999. Twelve organisations and more than 300 General
Practitioners in the eastern region also received complimentary
copies of the CD-ROM.
Entitled "Living
Well With Diabetes", this CD-Rom is developed by CGH's diabetes
specialist team comprising of consultant endocrinologist Dr Lee
Chung Horn, Pharmacy Manager Mrs Joanna Wong, Assistant Director
of Information Services Mr Alvin Ong, Dietetics Manager Ms Magdalin
Cheong and Nursing Officer Grace Chang.
This CD-ROM is an extension of the hospital's Skills For Life :
Diabetes programme which aims to equip diabetics and their care
givers on skills for self care. In living the hospital's mission
of improving the health of the community in the east, this is one
of several self care programmes to help patients with chronic conditions
take better care of themselves, so that they can lead full and healthy
lives.

Said Dr Lee
: "Having diabetes is tough, and without proper self-care, the condition
can degenerate, resulting in complications such as kidney failure,
blindness and amputation of limbs. Therefore my team and I wanted
to design a programme and CD-ROM to assist diabetics to take charge
of their lives."
Many diabetics
welcomed this educational aid. Mr Anthony Joseph, who was recently
diagnosed with diabetes said : "My wife, daughter and I have spent
some time looking at the CD-ROM and found it to be very interesting,
useful and informational, even though we were already well informed
on the subject."
