"We are in healthcare and therefore we have to be and look more healthy than our patients. On a more serious note, staff welfare is also important to us, as a happy and healthy staff will be able to provide better care and service for our patients," says Mr Liak Teng Lit, Chief Executive Officer of Changi General Hospital. Health is Wealth With this in mind, Changi GeneralÕs healthy lifestyle programme which started in 1992 is a structured, holistic and fun programme which looks into the health needs of each individual staff. It aims to uncover any hidden conditions through health screenings and aims to provide follow-up programmes if any are detected. This year's programme includes health screening for all staff. The screening contained a detailed questionnaire seeking information on a person's lifestyle habits, measurement of Body Mass Index (BMI), random blood glucose, blood cholesterol and blood pressure. A 13-page report was printed for each staff based on their results. |
The second part of the programme is called Test Your Limits. Staff are encouraged to test their fitness levels by participating in a number of exercises. Step-up, skipping and jogging just to name a few. Everyone is then assessed according to how well they performed and are classified into different fitness categories. Said one of the staff who is very pleased with the programme, Administrative Assistant, Ms Karen Tan: "I am glad that the hospital is concern about my health. I found out that my cholesterol level is high during last year's screening. I decided to exercise more and watch my diet more carefully. This year, I am glad to find out that my cholesterol level has improved."
As part of ACTIVE Day, all staff were encouraged to don their sports gear to work. Our frontliners, the Patient Service Assistants (PSA) attended to patients in the clinics and the wards in their sports wear. To encourage the community to adopt a healthy lifestyle, CGH organised a sports and health fair at the hospital. A free health screening for the public was also held from 10am to 4pm at the Health Education Centre. |
