General Surgery - Head & Neck Service

Changi General Hospital, Singapore’s Head & Neck Service takes care of patients with diseases related to the oral cavity (mouth), the pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box) and the various organs in the neck.

The Head & Neck Clinic was opened in 2005 under the purview of the Department of General Surgery and the Ear, Nose and Throat Department. Run by a multidisciplinary team, our patients benefit from the expertise of head and neck surgeons, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists, chemotherapists, dental surgeons, radiologists, histopathologists, speech and swallowing therapists and medical social workers.

Evaluation and management of head and neck lumps

All patients with head and neck lumps should be evaluated. This is because the most common telltale sign of a head and neck cancer is a neck lump. Other common symptoms of a head and neck cancer are as follows: mouth and tongue ulcers that don’t heal, difficulty in swallowing, hoarse voice or unexplained persistent pain in the face or mouth, sore throat or neck pain.

  • Thyroid gland
    • Goitres
    • Thyroid nodules
  • Salivary glands
    • Parotid gland
    • Submandibular gland
    • Other minor salivary glands
  • Cervical lymph nodes

Once your condition is identified, we can explore both surgical and non-surgical options and offer the best treatments for you.

Evaluation of other head and neck symptoms

Our service also evaluates and manages symptoms involving the organs in the head and neck including:

  • Evaluation of oral and tongue ulcers
  • Persistent epistaxis (nose-bleeds)
  • Change in voice / hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing food or drinks
  • Unexplained persistent pain in the face / mouth / throat / neck

Endoscopic thyroid resection

We offer endoscopic (keyhole) thyroid resection in selected cases. Advantages of this form of surgery is improved cosmetic results, with barely visible scars.

Evaluation and treatment of head & neck cancers

Our Head & Neck Service provides evaluation and treatment of cancers in the following regions:

  • Oral cavity (mouth)
  • Tongue
  • Throat
  • Larynx (voice-box)
  • Nasopharyngeal cancer

Post-resection surgical reconstruction

Head & neck cancers can be disabling and disfiguring. Together with the plastic surgeons, we are able to offer our patients surgical reconstruction after resection of their head & neck cancers. This provides our patients better cosmetic results, better function and better self-esteem. Often, surgical reconstruction can be carried out immediately after the cancer surgery, providing both treatment and reconstruction in the same operation.
