General Surgery - Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery

CGH Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) and Bariatric Surgery Service looks after patients with problems related to the stomach and oesophagus (gullet). We also perform weight-loss surgery as part of the CGH Weight Management Programme.

Evaluation and management of benign upper GI conditions

Problems of the oesophagus and stomach may present in a number of ways, such as upper abdominal pain / discomfort, feeling of bloatedness or indigestion, heartburn and regurgitation, or swallowing difficulty.

These may point to conditions such as:

  • Gastritis / duodenitis
  • H. pylori infection
  • Peptic ulcer disease
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn)
  • Oesophageal motility disorders

We use various techniques in the evaluation of these conditions. These include:

  • Upper GI endoscopy
  • Oesophageal pH monitoring
  • Oesophageal manometry

Evaluation and management of oesophageal / gastric tumours

Cancers of the upper GI tract may present as seemingly mild conditions such as abdominal discomfort, feeling of fullness after eating a small amount, or as swallowing difficulty. Using the techniques mentioned, we can evaluate the symptoms and diagnose conditions such as oesophageal and gastric cancers or benign tumours.

The surgical options available include:

  • Radical subtotal and total gastrectomy with lymph node clearance
  • Oesophagectomy
  • Minimal access surgery (keyhole surgery) for resection or enucleation of benign of gastric and oesophageal tumours
