Clinical Measurement Unit

The Changi General Hospital Clinical Measurement Unit conducts various tests to assess heart, lung, brain, nerve, muscle and urinary functions. These tests which are available on doctors' requests, are useful in the diagnosis of disease conditions.

Tests Relating to the Heart

The Clinical Measurement Unit conducts cardiac investigations which are important in the diagnosis of heart conditions, such as coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscles), valvular heart disease (disease of the heart valves), arrhythmias (heart disease associated with abnormal heart rhythms), hypertension, etc.

The tests include:

Tests Relating to the Lungs

Lung function testing is a range of tests that measure how well the lungs take in and exhale air and how efficiently they transfer oxygen into the blood. These tests are helpful in diagnosing conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They are also useful in monitoring the progression of diseases, in assessing response to treatment and for evaluating patient’s fitness for surgery.

Lung Function Tests
  • Spirometry
  • Lung Volumes
  • Diffusion Capacity
More Lung Function Tests
  • Methacholine Challenge Test (MCT) is a challenge test to determine how responsive your airways are and to determine the severity of any asthma.
    • Exercise Challenge Test (ECT)
is a challenge test to rule out the diagnosis of exercise-induced asthma.
    • Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT)
is a simple test that measures the maximal distance that patients can walk at their own pace in 6 minutes.
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) is a non-invasive test that measures the cardiac and lung function.
    • Tests of the Respiratory Muscle function
      • Maximal Pressure Test (MIPS / MEPS) is a test to measure respiratory muscle strength. This test involves measuring the maximal inspiratory effort and maximal expiratory effort.
      • Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV) is another measurement that measures the maximum volume of air that a person can inhale and exhale quickly over a sustained interval for 15 or 20 seconds.

Tests Relating to Nerves and Muscles

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and needle electromyography (EMG) play a central role in the evaluation of neuromuscular disorder. These tests are often used to diagnose disorders of peripheral nervous system. In addition, these studies can also provide useful diagnostic information in disorders of the central nervous system.
  • Electromyography Test (Nerve Conduction Studies/Needle Electrode Examination)
  • Autonomic Function Test
Test Relating to the Brain

Electroencephalography is the neurophysiological measurement of the electrical activity of the brain by recording from electrodes placed on the scalp. The resulting traces are represented by brain waves. This procedure is used to diagnose epilepsy, brain damage and other neurological problems.
  • Electroencephalography(EEG)
Test Relating to Urinary System
Other Test

Tests that ascertain the health of the stomach is also performed.
